In the context of Sibiu becoming the European Capital of Culture in 2007, major modernization and expansion works began, through which Romania aimed to have as many entry points into the country as possible that meet international standards. The terminal constructed by CONA is structured on two levels and allows for the processing of 300 passengers per hour, on each flow. In addition to areas for processing passenger and luggage flows (for EU and Non-EU states), the airport includes corresponding waiting rooms, airline company offices, commercial spaces, and a car park with a capacity of 300 places.
The structural framework of the terminal, consisting of concrete columns with spatially flared metallic elements at the top, creates a fluid space with generous openings. The glazed exterior walls and skylights in the roof plane provide good natural lighting.
The control tower, a dominant element of the ensemble, is made from monolithic concrete diaphragms. This structure allowed reaching the required height of 35 m, as specified in the project.
7 building bodies: passenger terminal of 7,500 sqm, control tower of 1,200 sqm, firefighter building: 1,500 sqm, other annex buildings: sprinkler station, fuel station, fire water reservoir.
